Tributyl phosphate (TBP) is a strong polar solvent used in the production of solutions of synthetic resins and naturalrubber. In both cellulose based plastics and synthetic resins, TBP is used as a flame-retarding plasticizer.Tributylphosphate is employed as a pasting agent for pigment pastes. Taken as a whole, the results of the different analyses were contradictory, suggesting that these samples should be treated as molecular solutions rather than colloids. This conclusion is supported by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations showing the existence of small, molecular aggregates in Tributylphosphate samples containing water and nitric acid. Interpretation of Tributyl phosphate and nitric acid diffusion measurements from a molecular perspective suggest that nitric acid and metal species formed are consistent with the stoichiometric solvates that have traditionally been considered to exist in solution.A molecular dynamics model for tributyl phosphate (TBP) and diamyl amyl phosphonate (DAAP) is presented using the Generalized AMBER Force Field (GAFF) and the AM1-BCC method for calculated atomic charges with a modification to the phosphorus-containing dihedral parameters. The density and average molecular dipole in a neat liquid simulation, and dimerization in dodecane and octane diluents, compare favorably to experimental values. At low extractant concentration, investigation of the dimer structure reveals the offset “head-to-head” orientation as the predominant structure over a range of TBP and DAAP concentrations with a phosphoryl oxygen separation distance between dimerized extractants of 3-5.5 Å. At high extractant concentrations, a graph analysis of extractant aggregates was used to determine concentrations of each aggregate size and the average coordination number, which gives a measure of the linearity of the aggregates. For aggregates up to 7 extractant molecules, the mean free energy of association per molecule was found to be 0.55-0.59 and 0.72 kcal/mol for Tributyl phosphate and DAAP, respectively. In both diluents, Tributyl phosphate formed large aggregates more frequently than DAAP, and those aggregates were more nonlinear than their DAAP equivalents. This finding anticipates differences in aggregation chemistry between Tributyl phosphate and DAAP in PUREX extraction systems.
Use
Tributyl phosphate is a solvent and plasticizer for cellulose esters such as nitrocellulose and cellulose acetate. It forms stable hydrophobic complexes with some metals; these complexes are soluble in organic solvents as well as supercritical CO2. The major uses of Tributyl phosphate in industry are as a component of aircraft hydraulic fluid, brake fluid, and as a solvent for extraction and purification of rare-earth metals from their ores.Tributyl phosphate finds its use as a solvent in inks, synthetic resins, gums, adhesives (namely for veneer plywood) and herbicide and fungicide concentrates. As it has no odour, it finds use as anti-foaming agent in detergent solutions, and in various emulsions, paints, and adhesives. It is also found as a defoamer in ethylene glycol-borax antifreeze solutions.[citation needed] In oil-based lubricants addition of Tributyl phosphate increases the oil film strength. It is used also in mercerizing liquids, where it improves their wetting properties. It is also used as a heat-exchange medium. Tributyl phosphate is used in some consumer products such as herbicides and water-thinned paints and tinting bases.
