Zinc is a bluish-white, lustrous metal with fair electrical conductivity. Zinc ores were used for making brass in ancient times, but metallic zinc was not produced until the 13th century. Five hundred years later, the element was rediscovered in Europe. It is brittle at room temperature, but malleable at 100 to 150°C. Zinc is used predominantly as an alloy with other metals.

History
Many centuries prior to the discovery of zinc in its metallic form, zinc ores were already used to heal wounds and make brass. It was at the time of the Romans during Augustus’ reign from 20BC to 14AD when brass was crafted and produced, but it was only in 1374 when zinc was identified as a new metal in India. Zinc oxide and zinc metal was produced in Zawar, India during the 12th through 16th centuries, and in China during the 17th century. Zinc was not identified as a metal on its own until 1546 in Europe.
Properties
Zinc powder or zinc dust comes in the form of a bluish-gray powder. It has no smell and it is insoluble in water. It has a boiling point of 907 degrees Celsius or 1,665 degrees Fahrenheit, and a melting point of 419 degrees Celsius or 786 degrees Fahrenheit. It is highly flammable and spontaneous combustion may occur if not handled properly; however, it is very stable under normal conditions as long as it is properly used and stored.
Storage and Handling
Zinc powder must be handled and stored properly and carefully because it is a flammable and hazardous substance. It should be stored in a tightly sealed container at all times and kept away from substances with which it is incompatible. These substances are water, sulfur, strong acids and bases, heat, chlorinated solvents, amines and cadmium. It is also air sensitive, but stable in cool dry places.

Health and Safety

Zinc Dust and Powders
Zinc powders and dusts are essentially finely divided zinc metal. A distinction is often made whereby ‘zinc dust’ refers to the product made by condensation
of zinc vapor and ‘zinc powder’ to the product of atomization of molten zinc. However, since the difference between powder and dust is essentially a matterof fineness, dusts being finer – sometimes the terms ‘dust’ and ‘powder’ are used simply to differentiate fine or course materials. Zinc dust and powders are widely used in the chemical industry to purify solutions by cementation or to achieve other reductions. Specific applications for special grades of zinc powders include alkaline batteries, paints, grease cmpds_fireworksand lubricants, brake linings, plastics, pharmaceuticals and the recovery of noble metals, among others.
Fireworks often make use of zinc dust to create bright, shimmering sparks. The zinc metal flakes heat up until they are incandescent and shine brightly or, at a high enough temperature, actually burn. Reactivity Profile
ZINC METAL is a reducing agent. Reacts violently with oxidants causing fire and explosion hazards. In the presence of carbon, the combination of chlorine trifluoride with zinc results in a violent reaction.Sodium peroxide oxidizes zinc with incandescence. Zinc powder or dust in contact with acids forms hydrogen. The heat generated by the reaction is sufficient to ignite the hydrogen evolved. A mixture of powdered zinc and an oxidizing agent such as potassium chlorate or powdered sulfur can be exploded by percussion. Zinc burns in moist chlorine. A mixture of zinc and carbon disulfide reacts with incandescence. Zinc powder reacts explosively when heated with manganese chloride. The reaction between zinc and selenium or tellurium is accompanied by incandescence. When zinc and ammonium nitrate are mixed and wetted with a minimum of water, a violent reaction occurs with evolution of steam and zinc oxide. When hydrazine mononitrate is heated in contact with zinc a flaming decomposition occurs at temperatures a little above its melting point. Hydroxylamine is reduced when heated with zinc dust, unpredictably it may either ignite and burn or explode.
