A white or almost white, crystalline powder, freely but slowly soluble in water, practically insoluble in ethanol (96 per cent). Major use of lactose monohydrate is in the pharmaceutical industry. Lactose is added to pills as a filler because of its physical properties, i.e., compressibility.
