MIBC has excellent solvency, a relatively high boiling point and a medium evaporation rate. Because of its compatibility with other organic solvents it is often used in solvent blends to deliver specific performance characteristics.

MIBC is a colourless stable liquid with a medium odour. It has good solvent power for dissolving oils, waxes, gums, natural resins and cellulose but may also be used as a latent solvent within a solvent blend to alter performance characteristics such as drying/curing and viscosity/flow.

Applications where MIBC may be used include surface coatings, thinners, printing inks, adhesives, cosmetics, toiletries and cleaners. It may also be used in pharmaceuticals applications, for the extraction of vitamins and minerals, as wetting agents in lithographic printing and as chemical intermediates. MIBC can also be used in the production of lube oil additives, hydraulic fluids and plasticisers.

MIBC is widely used as an ore floating agent and as lubricant oil additive.
