Origin

Myristyl Alcohol is derived from natural sources like palm kernel, coconut, or other vegetable oils.

For this procedure, myristic acid is hydrogenated in the presence of a catalyst such as palladium or nickel.

Myristyl Alcohol can be in the form of a white waxy solid, flakes, or powder.

Lauryl myristyl alcohol is also sometimes utilized as a surfactant, often with other surfactants.

Lauryl myristyl alcohol is considered safe when used in cosmetics.

Lauryl myristyl alcohol is a type of fatty alcohol, a form of the combination of C14 and C12 that is myristyl and lauryl.

Lauryl myristyl alcohol has extensive uses in several industries, including cosmetic, food, automotive, textile, and chemical industries.

Lauryl myristyl alcohol is a mixture of fatty alcohols derived from coconut oil.

Lauryl myristyl alcohol is generally used with other elements to form lotions, creams, and other personal care products.

Lauryl myristyl alcohol has emollient & emulsion-stabilizing qualities and is utilized in cosmetic products to moisturize the skin while preventing soluble ingredients from separating.

Safety Profile of MYRISTYL ALCOHOL

Myristyl Alcohol is good for skin and hair and has no significant side effects. In some cases, it can cause mild allergies and irritation.

Therefore, a patch test is necessary, especially for sensitive skin types.

Generally, Myristyl Alcohol is not comedogenic, meaning it does not clog pores or cause acne. Myristyl Alcohol is also vegan and halal since it is derived from plant-based sources like coconut oil.

Production of Myristyl alcohol:

Myristyl alcohol is obtained from palm kernel or coconut oil fatty acids by esterification and catalytic hydrogenation.

Myristyl alcohol is classified as a white crystalline solid mid-cut alcohol below 36-39 ºC.

Myristyl alcohol may be prepared by the hydrogenation of myristic acid (or its esters); myristic acid itself can be found in nutmeg (from where it gains its name) but is also present in palm kernel oil and coconut oil, and it is from these that the majority of 1-tetra decanol is produced.

Myristyl alcohol may also be produced from petrochemical feedstocks via the Ziegler process.

Uses of Myristyl alcohol:

As with other fatty alcohols, 1-tetradecanol is used as an ingredient in cosmetics such as cold creams for its emollient properties.

Myristyl alcohol is also an intermediate in synthesizing other products, such as surfactants.

Industrial uses: biocides (manufacturer of disinfectants, pest control products), coating products, anti-freeze products, lubricants and greases, polishes and waxes, washing & cleaning products.

Cosmetic uses: Emulsion stabilizing, skin conditioning, skin conditioning-emollient, surfactant-foam boosting, viscosity controlling.

Toxicity

Like other fatty alcohols, myristyl alcohol has very low acute toxicity, with LD50 >5000 mg/kg (oral, rat)
