N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone

N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone, also called NMP, N-methyl pyrrolidinone, N-methyl-2-pyrrolidon, or 1-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, is a highly polar, aprotic organic solvent with a low viscosity.

N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone is readily miscible with water and other organic solvents and is widely used in many applications.

N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) is a powerful, aprotic solvent with high solvency and low volatility.

This colorless, high boiling, flash point, and low vapor pressure liquid carries a mild amine-like odor. 

N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone has high chemical and thermal stability and is completely miscible with water at all temperatures. 

N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone is a co-solvent with water, alcohols, glycol ethers, ketones, and aromatic/chlorinated hydrocarbons. 

N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone is both recyclable by distillation and readily biodegradable.

N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone is a versatile solvent for numerous applications, including graffiti removal, automotive and industrial cleaning, water-borne coatings, and photoresist stripping.

1) Electronics

Electronics. 

N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone has been used in electronics for many years as a photoresist stripper. 

With the phase-out of CFCs, NMP has gained widespread acceptance as a solvent in other electronic applications, including semi-aqueous de-fluxing, degreasing, and coatings (polyamide, epoxy, and polyurethane).

Graffiti Removers. 

N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone-based graffiti removers combine high performance and biodegradability with low volatility and flammability. 

N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone can be blended with glycol ethers or acetates such as Glycol Ether PMA, PEA, and DPMA; they are cost-effective and improve performance on surfaces defaced by lipstick and crayon graffiti.

N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone is a powerful solvent for most commercial resins. 

Due to its high boiling point and excellent solvent power, N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone extends and improves the properties of high-temperature bake coatings. 

For instance, high solid binders are more easily obtained with NMP as the solvent.

Quite often, baked finishes yield coatings with outstanding mechanical and dielectric properties.

N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone also aids rheological control: better flow and leveling -less cratering and pin holing. 

For these reasons, N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone is highly effective in wire coating and other high-temperature coating applications. 

N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone is also the preferred solvent for urethane dispersions and is an excellent coalescent for acrylic and styrene acrylic latexes.

The agricultural chemical industry takes advantage of N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone’s solvency and handling properties in agricultural formulations.

N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone can suitably be used as a solvent, especially in agricultural applications, including Alachlor, Propoxur, Oxyfluorfen, Difenoconazole, Trifluralin, Triadimenol, Tebuconazole, Pendimethalin, Propanil, Phenmedipham, Alpha-Cypermethrin, and Chlorpyrifos formulations.

Consumer and Industrial Cleaners. 

N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone is an effective stripping agent in floor stripping, oven cleaners, graffiti removers, and paint strippers. 

Due to its high solvency and low volatility, N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone is used in automotive and industrial cleaners with solvents such as hydrocarbons, terpenes, propylene carbonate, and P-Series glycol ethers.

N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone can be used for various industrial cleaning purposes, such as in the textile industry, for removing polymeric materials, dyes, and other contaminants. 

These cleaning purposes include use as an efficient stripping agent for varnishes, paints, and other finishes based on cellulose, vinyl, acrylic, and other resins. 

Another example of N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone’s usage is removing carbon deposits and other combustion products from combustion engines.

Petrochemical Processing. 

N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone has been shown to have a selective affinity for unsaturated hydrocarbons, aromatics, and sulfur-bearing gases. 

Due to its relative non-reactivity and high solvency, N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone finds broad applicability as an extraction solvent in lube oil processing and natural and synthetic gas purification.

Miscellaneous Solvent Applications. 

The excellent thermal and chemical stability of NMP enhances its utility as a solvent or co-solvent in many synthetic reaction systems. 

N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone shows a selective affinity for unsaturated hydrocarbons, aromatics, and sulfur compounds. 

N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone can co-solvent with water, aromatic/chlorinated hydrocarbons, alcohols, glycol ethers, and ketones.

N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone is hygroscopic (picks up moisture) but stable under normal conditions. 

N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone will violently react with strong oxidizers such as hydrogen peroxide, nitric acid, sulfuric acid, etc. 

The primary decomposition products produce carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxide fumes.

N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone, N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone or NMP, has been an essential solvent for fluorinated coatings. 

N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone is a very slow-evaporating solvent.

N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone is a solvent for agricultural formulations and synthesis applications such as insecticides, fungicides, and herbicides.

N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone solvent is highly resistant to hydrolysis from pH 2-10, even at elevated temperatures.

N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) is a versatile water-miscible polar aprotic solvent. N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone is used as a drug solubilizer and penetration enhancer in humans and animals.

N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone is freely soluble in polar and nonpolar solvents and should readily cross biological membranes. N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone is quickly absorbed from human skin and gastrointestinal and respiratory tracts.

N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone has been used for dissolving some binder resins, such as polyamide/imide (PAI) or polyethersulfone (PES), used in fluoropolymer-based one-coats and primers.

N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone, commonly referred to as N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone, NMP, or M-Pyrol, is used within the semiconductor industry as a degreaser, a resist stripper and a solvent for phenolic die coat resins

N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone is used to recover certain hydrocarbons generated in the processing of petrochemicals, such as the recovery of 1,3-butadiene and acetylene. 

N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone absorbs hydrogen sulfide from sour gas and hydrodesulfurization facilities.
