2-Diethylaminoethanol is petitioned for use in boiler chemical systems to prevent carbonic acid corrosion in return lines.

2-Diethylaminoethanol is an ingredient in pesticide formulations and as a chemical intermediate for the production of emulsifiers, detergents, and solubilizers.

2-Diethylaminoethanol is an ingredient in Polyethylene Wax (PE Wax) Emulsion formulations.

Anionic Formulation (25% solids) Percent:

Polyethylene Wax of Ataman Chemicals: 21.25 %

Oleic Acid: 3.75 %

2-Diethylaminoethanol: 3.75 %

Water: 71.25 %

DEAE (Diethylamino ethanol) is a standard amine used in PE Wax Emulsion formulas.

Procedure:

Mix oxidized PE Wax and Oleic acid and melted to a temperature of 125-135 C.

Stir in the amine and mix well to allow the amine to react with the fatty acid and oxidized polyethylene.

Allowing the mix to cool somewhat during this time will reduce the volatilization of the amine.

After the amine has reacted – increase the melt temperature to 125-130 C and slowly add the wax melt to an agitated vessel where demineralized water has been preheated to 95-98oC.

After all the wax melt has been added to the vessel, the emulsion should be cooled rapidly while agitating.

Improper agitation and/or slow cooling may result in crusting or creaming of the emulsion.

Cooling can be facilitated by a double-jacketed vessel or an external heat exchanger.

Following cooling to room temperature, a bactericide can be added to aid the shelf life of the emulsion.

The emulsion should then be discharged and filtered.

2-Diethylaminoethanol inhibits corrosion by neutralizing carbonic acid in steam and steam condensates and scavenging free oxygen.

2-Diethylaminoethanol is used in conjunction with cyclohexylamine, morpholine, and octadecylamine.

2-Diethylaminoethanol is a neutralizing amine boiler additive generally used in combination with other neutralizing amines such as morpholine.

2-Diethylaminoethanol acts as a volatile basic amine capable of neutralizing carbonic acid in steam, thereby preventing corrosion in steam lines and the removal of oxygen.

2-Diethylaminoethanol is made by chemically synthesizing diethylamine with ethylene chlorohydrin or ethylene oxide. Therefore, it is synthetic.
