4-chloro-3-methyl-phenol

p-Chlorocresol is the organic compound with the formula ClC6H4OH. It is a monochlorinated m-cresol. It is a white or colorless solid that is only slightly soluble in water. As a solution in alcohol and in combination with other phenols, it is used as an antiseptic and preservative.

It is a moderate allergen for sensitive skin.

PCMC is a prill form chlorophenolic, low toxicity biocide developed for the complete in-can protection of water based products. PCMC is effective against a wide range of microorganisms including gram positive and gram negative bacteria, yeast and fungi. Microorganisms grow at a rapid rate and without use of the correct biocide, numbers can increase dramatically.

Chlorocresol appears as a pinkish to white crystalline solid with a phenolic odor. Melting point 64-66°C. Shipped as a solid or in a liquid carrier. Soluble in aqueous base. Toxic by ingestion, inhalation or skin absorption. Used as an external germicide. Used as a preservative in paints and inks.

p-Chlorocresol is prepared by chlorination of m-cresol.

Chlorocresol is a biocide used for its disinfectant and preservative properties, in topicals or cutting fluid.

PRODUCT DETAILS

For the preservation of adhesives, glues, polymer dispersions and emulsions, metalworking/cutting fluids, dyes, industrial lubricants, pigments and filler suspensions, materials in the building industry (e.g., concrete additives, joint cements), paint and coatings, paper, textile, photo, oil industries and leather at all stages of production.

TYPICAL APPLICATIONS

It is recommended that the PCMC Preservative be pre-dissolved (e.g. in alcohol, glycol or caustic soda solution) to ensure the product is evenly distributed in the finished formulation.

PCMC Preservative can also be added in the form of an alkaline stock solution.

A stock solution containing 30% PCMC Preservative can be formulated by stirring 1 kg PCMC Preservative into 1.85 liters of water and 0.5kg 50% caustic soda solution until it dissolves.

Dissolving can be accelerated by gently heating the liquid.

The steam-volatility of PCMC Preservative must be taken in account in the case of certain applications (e.g. when drying glue slurries which contain PCMC Preservative)

p-Chloro-m-cresol (PCMC) which is also known as chlorocresol is used as an external germicide and bactericide agent. It

has bactericidal activity against Gram positive and Gram negative organisms, along with yeasts, moulds and spores. It is also used as

preservative for various pharmaceutical preparations like cosmetics, lotions, tanning agents, and topical corticosteroids. Other than that, it is also used in glues, paints and varnishes, and leather goods. Moreover, it is used widely in eye drops, injections, shampoos

and emulsions due to its disinfectant and antifungal properties. Its antiseptic property makes it suitable for use in heparin solutions, andin various creams for skin care and dermatological care. Apart from that, it is reported as potent activator of Ca2+ release mediated

by ruthenium red/caffeine-sensitive Ca2+ release channel in skeletal muscle sarcoplasmic reticulum.

Chlorocresol, NF uses and applications include: External germicide; biocide; disinfectant; antimicrobial, preservative for paints, latex coatings, emulsions, adhesives, glues, gums, textiles, leather goods, pharmaceuticals, topicals, especially for starch and casein-based systems; antiseptic; defoamer in food-contact coatings and paperpaperboard; preservative in food-contact animal glues; in food packaging adhesives Use Level 0.1-0.15 (injectables), 0.075-0.12 (topicals)

Chlorocresol is a potent chlorinated phenolic disinfectant and antiseptic. It has bactericidal activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and is effective against fungi but has little activity against bacterial spores except at high temperatures. It is more active in acid than in alkaline solution. Chlorocresol is used in preparations for disinfection of the skin and wounds. It is also used as a preservative in cosmetics and in creams and other preparations for external use that contain water. Chlorocresol is used as a preservative in aqueous injections issued in multidose containers. It may also be added to aqueous preparations that cannot be sterilised in their final containers and have to be prepared using aseptic precautions. Concentrations of 0.1% have generally been used. Injections prepared with chlorocresol should not be injected into the CSF, the eye, or the heart. Also such injections should generally not be given in volumes greater than 15 mL. Sterilisation by heating with a bactericide such as chlorocresol is no longer a recommended practice.

As for Phenol. The antimicrobial activity of chlorocresol may be reduced by incompatibility (see above), adsorption, increasing pH, or through combination with organic matter (including oils and fats) or nonionic surfactants. Chlorocresol is less toxic than phenol. Sensitisation reactions may follow application to the skin and hypersensitivity has occurred after systemic use of injections containing chlorocresol as a preservative.
