Composition: Aluminium hydroxychloride
INCI name: Aluminum Chlorohydrate
Aluminium chlorohydrate is a mild astringent that reduces perspiration and has a slight deodorising effect. It is therefore used in a wide range of antiperspirant and deodorant formula-tions.
Aluminum hydroxychloride has been used on a growing scale for many years throughout the world as an active ingredient in antiperspirant products. It is generally well tolerated also on long-term use.
Although Locron is beeing well tolerated, dermatologi-cal trials should be carried with the final antiperspirant/deodorant formulation to establish beyond doubt that no skin irritation is caused by the combination of products, each of which is in itself non-irritant.
Aluminium chlorohydrate is a group of specific aluminum salts having the general formula AlnCl(3n-m)(OH)m. It is used in cosmetics as an antiperspirant and as a coagulant in water purification.
In water purification, this compound is preferred in some cases because of its high charge, which makes it more effective at destabilizing and removing suspended materials than other aluminum salts such as aluminium sulfate, aluminium chloride and various forms of polyaluminium chloride (PAC) and polyaluminium chlorisulfate, in which the aluminum structure results in a lower net charge than aluminium chlorohydrate. Further, the high degree of neutralization of the HCl results in minimal impact on treated water pH when compared to other aluminium and iron salts.

Water treatment chemical Aluminum Chlorohydrate, Inorganic macromolecular compound; colorless or light yellow solid powder, compeletely dissolved in water with corrosion .
Aluminum chlorohydrate is a group of water-soluble aluminum complexes with the general formula AlnCl(3n-m)(OH)m. It is included up to 25% in over-the-counter hygiene products as an active antiperspirant agent. The primary site of action of aluminum chlorohydrate is at the level of the stratum corneum layer, which is relatively near the skin surface. It is also used as a coagulant in the water purification process.
Uses
Aluminum chlorohydrate is one of the most common active ingredients in commercial antiperspirants. The variation most commonly used in deodorants and antiperspirants is Al2Cl(OH)5.
Aluminum chlorohydrate is also used as a coagulant in water and wastewater treatment processes to remove dissolved organic matter and colloidal particles present in suspension.
Synthesis
Aluminum chlorohydrate can be commercially manufactured by reacting aluminum with hydrochloric acid. A number of aluminum-containing raw materials can be used, including aluminum metal, alumina trihydrate, aluminum chloride, aluminum sulfate and combinations of these. The products can contain by-product salts, such as sodium/calcium/magnesium chloride or sulfate.
Because of the explosion hazard related to hydrogen produced by the reaction of aluminum metal with hydrochloric acid, the most common industrial practice is to prepare a solution of aluminum chlorohydrate (ACH) by reacting aluminum hydroxide with hydrochloric acid. The ACH product is reacted with aluminum ingots at 100 °C using steam in an open mixing tank. The Al to ACH ratio and the time of reaction allowed determines the polymer form of the PAC n to m ratio.

An antiperspirant is a chemical agent that reduces perspiration or sweating. The active ingredients of roll-on, spray and powder formulations are traditionally the metallic salts aluminium chloride and aluminium chlorohydrate. These are formulated into preparations of varying strengths. More concentrated solutions are used to control excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis).
Newer generation antiperspirants contain aluminium zirconium compounds. These are better tolerated by the skin and are less likely to cause irritation or aggravation to razor burn.
Diphemanil methylsulfate powder may also be used to reduce perspiration. It is particularly useful on an amputation stump to reduce irritation by a prosthesis.
Deodorants are not antiperspirants. Deodorants do not prevent sweating. Their aim is to mask the smell produced by sweat-eating bacteria. An antiperspirant preparation may contain a deodorant.
How do antiperspirants work?
Aluminium-based antiperspirants work by blocking the sweat ducts, thereby reducing the amount of sweat that reaches the skin’s surface. Aluminium salts are soluble as long as the formulation is acidic (low pH). When they are applied to the skin and come in contact with sweat, the pH rises causing the aluminium salts to precipitate out and form a plug over the sweat glands. Sweat continues to be produced by the sweat gland but it just isn’t able to reach the surface of the skin.
Diphemanil methylsulfate is a drug that opposes the action of the parasympathetic nerves that control sweat production.
How do you use an antiperspirant?
A higher concentration antiperspirant is usually more effective than a low concentration or aluminium-free preparation. However, increasing the strength can also increase the potential for side effects. A couple of simple rules apply to their use.
Apply to dry skin, after a cool shower at bedtime. During sleep sweating is limited and the active ingredients have a better chance of being absorbed into the sweat glands. Wash off in the morning.
Apply on a regular basis as directed by your doctor. Initially, this may be 7-10 nights in a row, then reducing to every other night for one week. When improvements are seen, patients can move to a maintenance schedule of using it once every 7–12 days. Over time reapplication may be needed even less frequently.
Where can you use an antiperspirant?
Antiperspirants are often the first line of treatment for underarm hyperhidrosis as they are readily available from the pharmacy or supermarket. Antiperspirants may also be used in other sites of the body that tend to sweat excessively. If standard preparations fail, stronger strength preparations are available at your pharmacy.
Sweat is a dilute salt solution produced by eccrine sweat glands spontaneously or in response to heat, exercise and stressful events. Eccrine sweat is initially odourless but can start to smell if bacteria get a chance to break down the stale sweat. The eccrine glands are distributed over the entire body but are most numerous under the arms and on the palms and soles.
Apocrine sweat glands are located under the arms, around the breasts and in the groin. After puberty, they produce a thick secretion that contains pheromones, the “personal scent” that most people find unpleasant. In addition, bacteria that normally live on the skin break down apocrine sweat and this produces offensive body odour. Body odour is worse if there are more bacteria present or the level of apocrine sweat production is high. Antiperspirants also help to reduce apocrine sweat production.
CHLOROHYDRATE D’ALUMINIUM; Hydroxychlorure d’aluminium; N ° CE / Liste: 234-933-1; N ° CAS: 12042-91-0; Mol. formule: Al2ClH5O5
Composition: Hydroxychlorure d’aluminium
Nom INCI: Chlorohydrate d’aluminium

ALUMINUM CHLOROHYDRATE: Aluminum Chlorohydrate is a complex inorganic salt that consists of complex basic aluminumchloride described empirically as: This complex is polymeric, loosely hydrated and encompasses a range of aluminum to chlorideratios from 2.1 down to but not including 1.9 to 1. In the United States, Aluminum Chlorohydrate may be used as an active ingredient in OTC drug products. When us ed as an active drug ingredient, the established name is Aluminum Chlorohydrate. Aluminum chlorohydrate is a group of water-soluble aluminum complexes with the general formula AlnCl(3n-m)(OH)m. It is included up to 25% in over-the-counter hygiene products as an active antiperspirant agent. The primary site of action of aluminum chlorohydrate is at the level of the stratum corneum layer, which is relatively near the skin surface . It is also used as a coagulant in the water purification process. Aluminium chlorohydrate is a group of salts having the general formula AlnCl(3n-m)(OH)m. It is used in deodorants and antiperspirants and as a flocculant in water purification. Aluminium chlorohydrate can be commercially manufactured by reacting aluminium with hydrochloric acid. A number of aluminium-containing raw materials can be used, including aluminium metal, alumina trihydrate, aluminium chloride, aluminium sulfate and combinations of these
Aluminium chlorohydrate is a group of specific aluminium salts having the general formula AlnCl(3n-m)(OH)m. It is used in cosmetics as an antiperspirant and as a coagulant in water purification.
In water purification, this compound is preferred in some cases because of its high charge, which makes it more effective at destabilizing and removing suspended materials than other aluminium salts such as aluminium sulfate, aluminium chloride and various forms of polyaluminium chloride and polyaluminium chlorisulfate, in which the aluminium structure results in a lower net charge than aluminium chlorohydrate. Further, the high degree of neutralization of the HCl results in minimal impact on treated water pH when compared to other aluminium and iron salts.

SAFETY
The Food and Drug Administration considers the use of aluminium chlorohydrate in antiperspirants to be safe and it is permitted in concentrations up to 25%[
Alzheimer’s disease
Studies have found only a negligible association between exposure to and long-term use of antiperspirants and Alzheimer’s disease. There is no adequate evidence that exposure to aluminium in antiperspirants leads to progressive dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
Heather M. Snyder, the senior associate director of medical and scientific relations for the Alzheimer’s Association, has stated, “There was a lot of research that looked at the link between Alzheimer’s and aluminium, and there hasn’t been any definitive evidence to suggest there is a link”.
Breast cancer
The International Journal of Fertility and Women’s Medicine found no evidence that certain chemicals used in underarm cosmetics increase the risk of Ted S. Gansler, the director of medical content for the American Cancer Society, stated “There is no convincing evidence that antiperspirant or deodorant use increases cancer risk”
STRUCTURE
Aluminium chlorohydrate is best described as an inorganic polymer and as such is difficult to structurally characterise. However, techniques such as gel permeation chromatography, X-ray crystallography and 27Al-NMR have been used in research by various groups including that of Nazar[7] and Laden[8] to show that the material is based on Al13 units with a Keggin ion structure and that this base unit then undergoes complex transformations to form larger poly-aluminium complexes.
SYNTHESIS
Aluminium chlorohydrate can be commercially manufactured by reacting aluminium with hydrochloric acid. A number of aluminium-containing raw materials can be used, including aluminium metal, alumina trihydrate, aluminium chloride, aluminium sulfate and combinations of these. The products can contain by-product salts, such as sodium/calcium/magnesium chloride or sulfate.[
Because of the explosion hazard related to hydrogen produced by the reaction of aluminium metal with hydrochloric acid, the most common industrial practice is to prepare a solution of aluminium chlorohydrate (ACH) by reacting aluminium hydroxide with hydrochloric acid. The ACH product is reacted with aluminium ingots at 100 °C using steam in an open mixing tank. The Al to ACH ratio and the time of reaction allowed determines the polymer form of the PAC n to m ratio.
Inorganic high-molecule polymers
Poly aluminium chloride is an inorganic high-molecule polymer with some cementitious property. It can be used as the binder of refractory coating, ultra-pure alumina products and refractory concrete material. Poly aluminium chloride is a multivalent, polyhydroxy electrolyte and can be seen as the intermediate product of the hydrolysis of AlCl3 into Al (OH) 3. The colloidal nucleus contains positive charge with the hydrolysis product being acidic. The composition of these products is the mixed system of various kinds of aqueous complexes in certain ratio under certain conditions. Its expression formula is [Al2 (OH) n • Cl6-n] m, wherein n = 1-5, m≤10. Owing to the difference in the preparation and performance, Poly aluminium chloride can also be called as hydroxy aluminum chloride, basic aluminum chloride, and polymeric alumina. The main index of physical and chemical properties includes alkalinity, pH value, Al2O3 content and the relative density. Poly aluminium chloride is rich in raw materials and has low cost without causing decrease of the refractoriness of refractory concrete. It also has strong activity at high temperatures and can be hardened at room temperature when doped with small quantities of accelerators and thus is promising cement material.
USES
It is one kind of refractory binder. It is a kind of aluminum hydroxide sol made from aluminum-containing material or aluminum metal which subject to several chemical/physical treatment steps such as hydrochloric acid dissolution, hydrolysis, and polymerization. Poly aluminium chloride can be taken as the intermediate of the hydrolysis process of AlCl3 into Al(OH)3 and therefore the hydrolysis solution is acidic. Poly aluminium chloride is also known as hydroxy aluminum or basic aluminum chloride with the chemical formula being [Al2 (OH) nCl6-n] m, wherein if the n is close to or equal to 6, it can be called as alumina sol. Applying poly aluminium chloride as a binding agent of loose refractory will not affect its refractoriness. The Al2O3 generated during the dehydration and decomposition of poly aluminium chloride during the heating process is a kind of active alumina oxide with high-degree of dispersion which can facilitate the sintering, and thus being suitable for being used as the refractory binder.
Poly aluminium chloride can be used for non-firing or fired to generate refractory products, fire-resistant plastic, and the binding agent of ramming and casting. When being used as the binding agent of monolithic refractory, it has certain requirement on both the alkalinity and density with poly aluminium chloride with either too low or too high bond strength not good. In general, poly aluminium chloride with alkalized degree being within 46% to 72% and the density being within 1.17~1.23kg/m3 has a good binding strength. When used as the binding agent of refractory casting, it can be used for synthesizing Magnesium aluminium spinel, electronic melting MgO and as the coagulation accelerator of cement. But when applying the poly aluminium chloride as unshaped refractory binder, because of its acidic solution (pH <5), it will have reaction with iron and iron-containing compounds contained in the refractory to release hydrogen and cause swelling of the material. Therefore, the preparation technology should contain aging step in order to avoid the swelling and further cracking of good molded product or lining.
It can be used for the purification process of drinking water as well as various kinds of industrial waste water.
As flocculants, it is mainly used for purifying drinking water and the treatment of special water such as removal of iron, fluorine, cadmium, radioactive contamination as well as floating oil. It can also be used for the treatment of industrial wastewater such as dyeing wastewater. Moreover, it can also be used for precision casting, pharmaceutical, paper, and leathering. Aluminium chlorohydrate is one of the most common active ingredients in commercial antiperspirants. The variation most commonly used in deodorants and antiperspirants is Al2Cl(OH)5.
Aluminium chlorohydrate is also used as a coagulant in water and wastewater treatment processes to remove dissolved organic matter and colloidal particles present in suspension.
