Benzophenone-4 is readily soluble in water because of the presence of sulfonic acid group. The sulfonic acid group must be neutralized with one of the usual neutralizing agents like triethanolamine or sodium hydroxide.

It must be noted that the neutralizing agent has no effect on the UV-absorption characteristics.

However, in case of over neutralization (pH > 9), the absorption shifts towards shorter wavelength.

The colour of Benzophenone-4 is intensified by neutralization and thus it may alter the hue of coloured solutions.

The neutralized product has a pH value between 5.5 and 6.0.

Pharmacodynamics

Benzophenone sunscreens, applied topically, protect the skin from these harmful effects of ultraviolet light by chemically absorbing light energy (photons).

Correct use of sunscreens serves to reduce the risk of sunburn.

Sunscreen agents prevent the occurrence of squamous-cell carcinoma of the skin when used mainly during unintentional sun exposure.

No conclusion can be drawn about the cancer-preventive activity of topical use of sunscreens against both basal-cell carcinoma and cutaneous melanoma.

Use of sunscreens can extend the duration of intentional sun exposure, such as bathing in the sun.

Mechanism of action

A surface coating of benzophenones decreases the amount of UV radiation absorbed by the skin by limiting the total amount of energy that reaches the skin.

Benzophenone sunscreens, applied topically, protect the skin from these harmful effects of ultraviolet light by chemically absorbing light energy (photons). As this occurs, the benzophenone molecule becomes activated to higher energy levels. As the excited molecule returns to its ground state, the energy is released in the form of thermal energy. The hydroxyl group in the ortho position to the carbonyl group is believed to be a structural requirement for the benzophenones’ absorption of UV light. This structural arrangement also contributes to the electronic stability of the molecule. Benzophenones absorb energy throughout the UV range, although the maximum UV absorbance is between 284 and 287 nm for the 2-hydroxybenzophenones

BENZOPHENONE-4 is a water-soluble, chemical sunscreen agent that is a secondary UVB absorber with some activity in the short UVA range as well.

Being a secondary UV absorber means that its protection is weak and it has to be combined with other sunscreen filters for proper sun protection.

More often than not, Benzophenone-4 is not only used as a sunscreen agent but also as a photoprotectant to extend product shelf life, or as a color-protectant for products in clear packages.

Uses & Benefits

In skincare products like soap and lip balm, benzophenone helps prevent the other product ingredients from degrading under UV light – protecting the product’s color and scent. Oxybenzone, a derivative of benzophenone, is also an ingredient in many sunscreens due to its ability to absorb harmful UV rays.

Benzophenone is also widely used in a range of household products and consumer goods. In laundry and cleaning products, benzophenone is added to the product formulation as a perfume compound, and it also helps to protect the product against degradation that could be caused by UV rays and exposure to air.

In consumer products like sunglasses, shoes and sports equipment, benzophenone helps to protect against UV rays that could damage or deteriorate the product. In addition, as an ingredient in non-food plastic packaging, it helps to prevent sun damage and fading of the product inside the packaging

What Is It?

Benzophenone-1, -3, -4, -5, -9 and-11 are compounds made from 2-hydroxybenzophenone. These compounds are powders. In cosmetics and personal care products, Benzophenone-1 and Benzophenone-3 are used mostly in the formulation of nail polishes and enamels. These Benzophenone ingredients are also used in bath products, makeup products, hair products, sunscreens and skin care products.

Benzophenone

Benzophenone is a sweet-smelling organic compound that occurs naturally in grapes and other fruits.

The compound is used in some personal care and consumer products and packaging as a UV filter.

Benzophenones are a group of aromatic ketones that have both pharmaceutical and industrial applications.

Benzophenones have UVB and some UVA absorbing properties and act like optical filters to block out harmful UV rays.

Benzophenones may be used in a sunscreen product to reduce skin damage and to retard photodegradation or extend shelf life in toiletries and plastic surface coatings.

Benzophenone-4 is a white or pale yellow powder. It is used in bath products, makeup products, hair products, sunscreens and skin care products to protect cosmetics and personal care products from deterioration by absorbing, reflecting, or scattering UV rays. When used as a sunscreen ingredient, Benzophenone-4 protects the skin from UV rays.

In cosmetics and personal care products, Benzophenone-1 and Benzophenone-3 are used mostly in the formulation of nail polishes and enamels.

These Benzophenone ingredients are also used in bath products, makeup products, hair products, sunscreens and skin care products.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the use of Benzophenone-3 and Benzophenone-4 as safe and effective, over-the-counter (OTC) sunscreen ingredients. When used as a sunscreen ingredient in the United States, Benzophenone-3 is called Oxybenzone, and may be used at concentrations up to 6%, and Benzophenone-4 is called Sulisobenzone, and may be used at concentrations up to 10%.

Benzophenone ingredients absorb and dissipate UV radiation, which serves to protect cosmetics and personal care products.

As part of sunscreen products, which are OTC drugs in the United States, Benzophenone-3 (Oxybenzone) and Benzophenone-4 (Sulisobenzone) protect the skin from the harmful effects of the sun. Exposing unprotected skin to UV light (primarily in the UV-B range) can result in sunburn and can promote premature aging of the skin and skin cancer.

Description: Water-soluble UVA and UVB filter. Only short UVA (UVA-2, 290-360 nm) but not long UVA are filtered.

Synonyms: Sulisobenzone, 1-phenol-4-sulfonic acid. Highly stable, does not degrade in sunlight but protects other UV blocking agents from UV-induced degradation.

Benzophenone-4 is readily soluble in water, propylene glycol, glycerin, ethanol and isopropyl alcohol. Due to its high acidity (pH <2.5 in a 1% solution), a neutralizing agent (e.g. triethanolamine) must be added to elevate the pH to >3.5.

Yellow to beige powder.

CAS: 4065-45-6

INCI Name: Benzophenone-4

Benefits:

-Water-soluble UVA & UVB filter. Used primarily as UVA filter

-Should be combined with other sunscreens (e.g. octocrylene, homosalate, ethylhexyl salicylate, OMcinnamate) for effective UVB protection. Benzophenone-4 provides inadequate UVB protection when used alone.

-Does not penetrate the skin to a large degree, but enhances the ability of other ingredients to penetrate

-Helps to stabilize UV sensitive formulations such as hair dyes, hair sprays and color enhanced formulations

-Provides protection of colorants against fading and help stabilize fragrances and active ingredients against oxidation

Use: Incorporate into water phase (pH 1.2-2.2). Allowed use levels: USA 10% (when used alone; 5-10% when used in combination), Brazil 10%, Japan 10%, EU 5%. For external use only.

Applications: Sun care products, color cosmetics with sun protection, various cosmetics & fragrances for product protection.

Raw material source: Benzophenone-3

Manufacture: Benzophenone-4 is prepared via sulfonation of benzophenone-3. The product is then purified by

precipitation from aqueous hydrochloric acid, isolated by centrifugation, washed with acidic water, and dried.

Function(s): Sunscreen Agent; Ultraviolet Light Absorber; UV ABSORBER; UV FILTER

Other names: Sulisobenzone, 1-Phenol-4-Sulfonic Acid, 2-Benzoyl-5-Methoxy-; 1-Phenol-4-Sulfonic Acid, 2-Benzoyl-5-Methoxy- (6Ci) ; 2-Benzoyl-5-Methoxy- 1-Phenol-4-Sulfonic Acid; 2-Hydroxy-4-Methoxybenzophenone- 5-Sulfonic Acid; 2-Hydroxy-4-Methoxybenzophenone-5-Sulfonic Acid; 5-Benzoyl-4-Hydroxy-2-Methoxy- Benzenesulfonic Acid; 5-Benzoyl-4-Hydroxy-2-Methoxybenesulfonic Acid; 5-Benzoyl-4-Hydroxy-2-Methoxybenzene Sulfonic Acid; 5-Benzoyl-4-Hydroxy-2-Methoxybenzenesulfonic Acid; 5-Benzoyl-4-Hydroxy-2-Methoxybenzolsulfonsaeure; B4

Sulisobenzone (benzophenone-4) is an ingredient in some sunscreens which protects the skin from damage by UVB and UVA ultraviolet light

Benzophenone-1, Benzophenone-3, Benzophenone-4, Benzophenone-5, Benzophenone-9 and Benzophenone-11 protect cosmetics and personal care products from deterioration by absorbing, reflecting, or scattering UV rays.

When used as sunscreen ingredients, Benzophenone-3 and Benzophenone-4 protect the skin from UV rays.

Why is it used in cosmetics and personal care products?

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the use of Benzophenone-3 and Benzophenone-4 as safe and effective, over-the-counter (OTC) sunscreen ingredients.

When used as a sunscreen ingredient in the United States, Benzophenone-3 is called Oxybenzone, and may be used at concentrations up to 6%, and Benzophenone-4 is called Sulisobenzone, and may be used at concentrations up to 10%.

The safety of Benzophenone-3 and related ingredients has been assessed by the Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel.

The CIR Expert Panel evaluated the scientific data and concluded that Benzophenone-1, -3, -4, -5, -9 and -11 were safe for use in cosmetics and personal care products.

In 2002, the CIR Expert Panel considered available new data on these Benzophenone ingredients and reaffirmed the above conclusion.
