FOOD Application of CMC:
VISCOLOSE® series of Cellulose Gum (E466) is a water-soluble stabilizer and thickener for different food-related applications.
When it comes to food or beverages, the question is how cellulose gum can improve the final product properties, and this is mainly related to the viscosity of the product in use.
The grades and functionality of the CMC can be tailored for specific uses such as battery, pharmaceutical, food, and personal care applications.
By choosing the right type of VISCOLOSE® CMC, end users can achieve the desired rheology for any aqueous system.
VISCOLOSE® Cellulose Gum is available in different ranges of viscosity: low, medium, and high.
VISCOLOSE® Cellulose Gum has viscosities between 10 to 10.000 cps with various particle sizes in granular, powder, or ultra-powder.
PAPER INDUSTRY Application of CMC:
CMC organic binders are commonly used in paper and paper board production for Wet-End and Surface Sizing applications.
For improved printability & print quality, optical properties, and smoothness, high solids content suspensions are applied during the manufacturing of paper and paper boards.
CMC, one of the most critical components of those solids, enhances the paper strength by increasing the fiber-to-fiber bonding among the cellulose fibers and helps other chemicals function effectively by controlling the rheology of the suspension.
TEXTILE INDUSTRY Application of CMC:
CMC is an excellent film-forming agent used for warp-sizing in textiles to provide high-strength to the cotton, rayon staple, and polyester yarns before they go into the weaving phase in high-speed looms.
The excellent solubility and problem-free wash-off (de-sizing) characteristics of USK® and RHEOLON® CMC make them easy to work with in sizing mills.
CMC suspension encapsulates the yarn in the sizing process, eventually increasing the abrasion resistance to prevent breakage during the weaving.
√ Improved separation of warp-threads
√ Reduced dusting
√ Enhanced elasticity of the yarns
√ Lower temperature and fast de-sizing are only a few advantages of using USK® and RHEOLON® series of CMC in textile sizing.
In textile screen printing, USK® and RHEOLON® series of CMC help rheological properties of the printing paste by providing a homogenous distribution of the suspension (preventing dye migration) on the screen and its uniform flow through the screen openings.
USK® and RHEOLON® series of CMC designed for textile sizing and printing applications are available in different qualities.
CERAMIC INDUSTRY Application of CMC:
CMC is an organic binder used in the production of ceramic bodies and the preparation of glazes.
Although there are several processes for ceramics production, CMC can be used in different production phases thanks to its versatile functions.
USK® and RHEOLON® CMC in the ceramic substrate production phase provide plasticity and strength to the body both in the slurry paste and after drying.
Glazing is an essential process in ceramic production, and USK® and RHEOLON® CMC play an important role;
√ Preventing sedimentation of solids
√ Rheology optimization of glaze suspension
√ Smooth and even surface
√ Adjustable drying time
Readily soluble in hot or cold water, USK® and RHEOLON® CMC are available in different grades for the ceramic industry.
PAINTS AND COATING APPLICATION OF CMC
CMC is a water-soluble thickener for water-based paint and coating systems.
There are a few parameters of CMC in water-based coating and adhesive applications to look for when it comes to the thickener:
√ Fiber free
√ Easy to disperse and dissolve
√ Available in the correct viscosity range
Having such properties USK® and RHEOLON® CMC help these water-based applications have optimized rheology by providing effects of;
√ Anti-settling of solids
√ Improved stability of the suspension over time
√ Water retention and thickening
√ Workability and open time
Dry mixes, latex-based plasters, fillers, and putties are other examples of applications in the construction industry.
USK® and RHEOLON® CMC for such applications come in ‘easy to handle’ forms and are available in different grades.
Other Application Areas of CMC
USK® and RHEOLON® series of CMC can be used in several other application areas not limited to those listed on this website, but a few to mention are;
Refractories: binding, stabilizing,
Welding Electrodes: binding, adhesion
Air Freshener Gels: rheology control
Batteries: binding, adhesion,
Ice Packs: suspending, rheology control
Briquettes: Coal Dust Binding, cohesion
and many others where an aqueous solution needs to be controlled in rheology.
CMC and PAC in Oil and Gas Drilling
Akkim Kimya offers a complete range of anionic cellulosic polymers for the drilling industry, following the international standards as quality benchmark while contributing to the end users’ over all well cost.
During the drilling of exploration and production wells for oil & gas and water, USK® CMC (Carboxymethyl Cellulose) & FILTRAPAC® PAC (Polyanionic Cellulose) series of products are used for two primary functions to form a filter cake at the borehole wall to minimize the water loss and to control the rheology of the fluid system.
DETERGENT APPLICATON OF CMC:
Environmentally safe water-soluble polymer for Household and I & I detergents
Production of household and I & I detergents in today’s global markets, where a manufacturer needs to stay as competitive as possible while maintaining a certain level of quality, is a challenge.
In response to this challenge, to minimize the costs and also to increase the efficiency of the raw materials, we have developed the USK® series of CMC, which are high-performance anti-redeposition agents and thickeners.
Three properties of the USK® series of CMC make these products superior to other anti-redeposition agents and provide certain benefits to detergent manufacturers;
√ Higher yield in performance
√ Efficient in lower concentrations
√ Reasonable in cost
USK® series of CMC designed for detergent powder and detergent paste are available in different qualities.
FLOTATION and PELLETIZATION Applications of CMC
USK®, RHEOFLO®, and RHEOLON® series of CMC are organic depressants commonly used in physicochemical mineral flotation processes where non-valuable (gangue) minerals are separated from valuable minerals.
Functioning as a depressant reagent, during the process, USK®, RHEOFLO®, and RHEOLON® series of CMC depress the unwanted mineral particles by adsorbing on them, making them hydrophilic, consequently non-floatable.
In contrast, valuable minerals are adsorbed by reagents called collectors, making them hydrophobic, consequently floating to the surface by air bubbles.
USK®, RHEOFLO®, and RHEOLON® series of CMC designed for minerals flotation are available in different qualities.
Iron Ore Pelletization
RHEOLON® series of CMC can be used as an organic binder in Iron Ore Pelletization, substituting what is traditionally used, Bentonite.
The advantages of using RHEOLON® CMC over bentonite are lower dosage or reduced silica content on the pellets and positive effects on the environment and energy consumption in pellet production.
