Applications: Diisobutyl Phthalate is a Dialkyl phthalate ester phthalate plasticizer which can be used as a substitute of dibutyl phthalate. Diisobutyl Phthalate as well as other phthalates have genotoxic effects and studies shown an increase in its monoester metabolite in human urine over the years.

Definition:

DIBP is a phthalate and an additive used to keep plastics soft or more flexible (plasticiser), often in combination with other phthalates.

DIBP is used in nitro cellulose plastic, nail polish, explosive material, lacquer manufacturing, etc.

DIBP has so far not been evaluated at EU level and is not subjected to any EU ban.

Because DIBP has very similar application properties to DBP which was banned in toys and childcare articles as well as in cosmetics, it may therefore be used as a substitute, for instance in PVC, paints, printing inks and adhesives.

Application

It is an excellent low cost plasticizer for cellulose nitrate.
It resembles DBP but has a lower specific gravity and lower freezing point.
DIBP is used effectively in protective coatings based on cellulose acetate, ethyl
cellulose, vinyl polymers etc.
DIBP is an effective plasticizer for polyvinyl acetate emulsion paints and its
versatility is one of the prime benefit offered by it in the processing and
applications of nitrite rubbers.
Under the food and Additives Regulations , DIBP may lawfully be used in food
packaging as an adhesive constituent.
In manufacturing of footwear & hose pipes.

 

 

Applications of Di Iso Butyl Phthalate

Di iso butyl phthalate is used as a plasticiser for nitrocellulose, cellulose ether, and polyacrylate and polyacetate dispersions.

It is frequently used with other high molecular weight phthalates as an additional, complementary plasticizer in PVC processing due to its ability to improve gelation.It is also used as a light-resistant plasticizer for lacquers and latex, as an additive in pigment pastes, in paints, nitro-cellulose plastic, explosive material, printing inks and adhesives.

It is used in as an alternative to DBP in products in which DBP is now banned, such as toys, childcare articles and cosmetics.

 

Storage and Handling

Di iso butyl phthalate is combustible andshould be stored in tightly-closed containers in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place away from sources of ignition. Containers must be kept upright to prevent leakage.

This material should be handled in accordance with good industry safety and hygiene practices. Implement relevant engineering controls and avoid breathing vapours, mist or gas. Inhalation of vapour may cause respiratory tract irritation and at high temperatures may irritate eyes and cause headaches, drowsiness and convulsions. Personal protective equipment including approved safety glasses, impervious clothing and gloves must be worn, and respirators should be worn where deemed necessary by risk assessments for the task being carried out
