Dimethiconol

Dimethiconol is a Skin-conditioning emollient that helps preserve hydration.

Dimethiconol enhances formulary texture for more elegant aesthetics and it also used in hair care products as a conditioning agent.

Dimethiconol is used in the formulation of a wide range of cosmetic and personal care products including cosmetic creams and lotions, suntan products, bath soaps, lipstick, shampoo and hair care products.

Dimethiconol is a chemical ingredient that functions as a skin/hair conditioner, anti-foaming agent and emollient.

Like most silicones, Dimethiconol has a unique fluidity that makes it easily spreadable.

When applied to the skin, Dimethiconol is known for creating a subtle gloss that feels smooth and silky to touch.

Dimethiconol also acts a mild water repellent by forming a protective barrier on the skin, and can fill in fine lines/wrinkles on the face, giving it a temporary “plump” look.

The cosmetic industry values Dimethiconol for its ability to impart a non-greasy emollience that makes the skin/hair look smooth and silky.

Dimethiconol is known to provide a less greasy feel than standard silicones without sacrificing any of its lubrication properties.

As a heavier silicone, Dimethiconol is often used in conjunction with lighter silicones that help better deliver it to the skin/hair, such as cyclopentasiloxane. This is particularly true  when it comes to conditioning hair care products.

Dimethiconol can be found in avariety of personal care products such as facial moisturizer/lotion, mascara, anti-frizz treatment, anti-aging treatment, sunscreen, shampoo/conditioner, styling gel and foundation.

Dimethiconol is a type of silicone that is used in skincare and hair care products. Silicones are a group of synthetic ingredients used to improve the texture and application of skincare, haircare, and cosmetics.

Dimethiconol, as a silicone, helps to improve the appearance, texture and feel of the product, prevent moisture loss from the skin, and enhance the efficacy of the product

Dimethiconol helps to make formulations feel silky and smooth on the skin.

Silicones may be able to help with skin redness and irritation due to their low surface tension, which enables them to spread easily across the surface of the skin and form a protective covering.

Often irritated and sensitive skin occurs through a damaged skin barrier.

The skin barrier is the protective barrier the skin naturally produces with its natural oils.

When the skin barrier is compromised it can worsen irritation and sensitivity, this is where silicones like dimethiconol may help by temporarily providing the skin with a protective barrier.

DIMETHICONOL

Chem/IUPAC Name: Poly[oxy(dimethylsilylane)], .alpha.-hydro-.omega.-hydroxy-

EC / List no.: 608-658-6

CAS no.: 31692-79-2

Dimethiconol is a type of silicone that works as an excellent skin conditioning emollient.

Dimethiconol is hydrating to a degree that it forms a layer on the skin to trap the moisture in – all without making the surface greasy.

Dimethiconol is widely used in skin care and hair care formulations as it also enhances the texture and makes the products easy to spread.

Dimethiconol appears as a thick colorless liquid and has a characteristic odor in its raw form

Dimethiconol is not soluble in water.

The chemical formula of Dimethiconol is HO(Si(CH3)2O)nH

Dimethiconol is a silicone-based liquid polymer that works as a skin-conditioning agent (emollient) and antifoaming agent in cosmetic formulas.

Dimethiconol multitasks by helping lubricate skin’s surface (without feeling greasy) to enhance hydration, while modifying the formula’s texture for a more pleasant consistency.

Dimethiconol can also be used in hair care products as a conditioning agent and is sometimes included in hair dyes to help the colour resist wash out.

Dimethiconol is often combined with other compounds and molecules to form derivatives such as dimethiconol arginine, dimethiconol beeswax, dimethiconol cysteine, and dimethiconol meadowfoamate—each with their own distinctive properties and functions.

Dimethoconols are a class of silicone-based polymers similar to dimethicone in their chemical structure save that molecules of dimethiconol end with hydroxyl (-OH) groups.

Dimethoconol is used in a wide range of cosmetic and personal care products such as suntan lotion and lipstick where it works as an emollient, a film-former, an antistatic agent and an anti-foaming agent, among other uses.

Like other silicone-based liquids, Dimethiconol is not water soluble.

Dimethiconol is a member of silicone family and common skincare ingredient in favorite beauty products that gives makeup primers the ability to smooth over texture and for giving the strands a glossy shine.

Dimethiconol is basically a type of silicone.

Dimethiconol gum is a dimethylsiloxane functional gum.

Dimethiconol gum is commonly used in Personal Care application in solution as basic ingredient in Hand and body lotion, protective creams, colour cosmetics, shower gels, sun creams and lotions, moisturizing creams and lotions.

Dimethiconol is a silicone polymer and basically dimethicone with a hydroxyl group on both ends of the molecule.

Hydroxyl group on both ends of the Dimethiconol molecule gives itself an added functionality and reactivity.

Dimethiconol is a good petrolatum alternative and also great in formulas for those with oilier skin textures.

Dimethiconol is a really useful ingredient in cosmetics that can improve the texture of a product by giving it some lightweight slip.

Because the molecule of Dimethiconol itself is on the larger side, it works best when diluted within a smaller silicone molecule.

Dimethiconol is common in hair products as a way of conditioning and imparting shine, but dimethiconol isn’t just great in terms of improving the sensorial experience—it’s a great product to improve the overall health of the skin.

Dimethiconol acts as a moisturizer, increasing hydration, coating the surface of skin and hair, and preventing evaporative water loss Like other silicones,

Dimethiconol is often used in gel creams and serums thanks to its textural and occlusive properties.

Dimethiconol’s occlusive properties can also protect the skin from external allergens and pollutants.

Dimethiconol provides Hydration, silky texture, lightweight occlusion, and protection from pollution in different cosmetic formulations.

Dimethiconol has multiple uses in the personal care and cosmetic industry.

Dimethiconol can be found in products like moisturizers and shampoos.

Skin care: Dimethiconol adds deep hydration properties to skin.

Dimethiconol reduces the visible signs of aging on the skin without feeling too heavy.

Dimethiconol forms a protective barrier on the surface and leaves the skin smooth and silky

Hair care: Dimethiconol is added to hair care products because of its excellent moisturizing and conditioning properties.

Dimethiconol is also anti-static and leaves the shafts healthier and bouncier.

Additionally, Dimethiconol is light and non greasy so it is great for the hair

What is Dimethiconol or Dimethiconol?

Dimethiconol is also known as silicone gum, it is actually a slightly modified dimethicone.

Here, two side chains carrying the methyl group have been replaced by hydroxyl (-OH) groups.

Silicones are larger molecules, and when applied to any surface, perhaps skin or hair, they form a film that is breathable but does not allow moisture to escape.

Siloxanes are the main units of polydimethylsiloxanes, in turn, dimethiconol.

Dimethiconol is often combined with amino acids such as cysteine, methionine or arginine or fatty acids such as stearic fatty acids or behenic acid) and some other compounds to form a derivative that is useful as a cosmetic ingredient.

Uses & Benefits

Dimethiconol is used for its unique film-forming property, like other derivatives; it also has excellent dispersal ability.

Dimethiconol gives a temporary improved appearance to the skin, when applied it fills in fine lines and wrinkles and makes them less visible.

Dimethiconol stabilizes any preparation for the presentation, since it prevents the formation of foams.

What happens is that by shaking or handling, foams can be created on top of a product, where it is not just foam but air trapped in the preparation, which can lead to destabilization of a product, sometimes the emulsion can also separate into two distinct phases.

Dimethoconol is also used as an antistatic agent, this property is particularly useful in conditioners or shampoos where it dramatically improves the look and feel of the hair. In addition, the antistatic effect helps the hair remain untangled.

As mentioned above, it is also a film former, this effect not only helps the product to exert its proper effect, but also protects the skin from other harmful environmental effects, retains moisture, and helps the skin stay hydrated.

Dimethiconol enhances the appearance of dry or damaged skin by reducing flaking and restoring suppleness.

Dimethiconol also acts as an Anti Foaming ingredient to avoid foam while shaking or during production of a product.

Texture

Silicones improve the feel, appearance, and performance of cosmetic and skincare products. Dimethiconol helps to make formulations feel silky and smooth on the skin.

While this is mainly a sensory aspect of the product, dimethiconol also helps the product to apply evenly to the skin.

This even application helps the product’s key ingredients to be delivered evenly.

Redness and irritation

Silicones may be able to help with skin redness and irritation due to their low surface tension, which enables them to spread easily across the surface of the skin and form a protective covering. Often irritated and sensitive skin occurs through a damaged skin barrier. The skin barrier is the protective barrier the skin naturally produces with its natural oils. When the skin barrier is compromised it can worsen irritation and sensitivity, this is where silicones like dimethiconol may help by temporarily providing the skin with a protective barrier.

Moisture

In a similar way to providing the skin with a protective barrier to protect irritated and sensitive skin, dimethiconol prevents moisture loss.

As we age or when our skin barrier is not working effectively, the skin loses moisture or water to the air.

This is particularly common in dry or air-conditioned environments.

This can leave the skin feeling dehydrated and often results in a lackluster appearance.

Dimethiconol acts as a conditioning agent thanks to its unique fluidity that makes it easily spreadable, which forms a protective barrier on the skin.

It is known for creating a subtle gloss that feels smooth and silky to touch.

Additionally, it helps to fill in lines and wrinkles on the face, giving skin a temporary ‘plump’ appearance.

Dimethiconol is known to provide a less greasy feel than standard silicones without sacrificing any of its smoothing properties.

As a heavier silicone, Dimethiconol is often used together with lighter silicones, such as cyclopentasiloxane, that help better deliver it to the skin.

Haircare

These same conditioning properties make dimethiconol an excellent ingredient for haircare products, like conditioners and leave-in serums.

Dimethiconol is thought to offer a controlled conditioning effect to leave unhealthy, damaged hair looking, and feeling more silky and smooth.

Additionally, dimethiconol is widely used in hair cuticle coats due to its ability to help with problems such as split-ends.
