ETHOXYLATED ISOTRIDECANOL
ISOTRIDECANOL ETHOXYLATES
CAS Number: 9043-30-5
Chemical family: Alcohol ethoxylates
ETHOXYLATED ISOTRIDECANOL is used as surfactant raw materials in detergents and cleaning products and as auxiliaries in textile production, metalworking, emulsifier technology, and chemical-industrial applications.
ETHOXYLATED ISOTRIDECANOL is a wetting agent, emulsifier, and dispersing agent e.g., in detergents, industrial & institutional cleaners, in emulsion polymerization or wax and silicon emulsions
ETHOXYLATED ISOTRIDECANOL is used in the following products: washing and cleaning products, fillers, putties, plasters, modeling clay, lubricants and greases, coating products, metal surface treatment products, textile treatment products and dyes, pH regulators and water treatment products, and polymers.
The alkylpolyglycol ether series of the isotridecanol are formed by the reaction of isotridecanol with varying amounts of ethylene oxide.
Synonym(s): Isotridecanol ethoxylate, Isotridecyl alcohol polyglycol ether (n EO), PEG isotridecyl ether, Polyethylene glycol monoisotridecyl ether, Polyoxyethylene (n) Isotridecyl Ether, Isotridecanol polyethylene glycol ether, Isotridecyl alcohol ethoxylate, iso-tridecyl alcohol polyglycol ether, Fatty alcohol ethoxylate, Polyoxyethylene (n) isotridecanol,  Alcohols, C13, branched, ethoxylated, alkylpolyethylene glycol ether, C13-oxo alcohol (isotridecanol) Ethoxylate, C13 alcohol ethoxylate, Isotridecyl polyethylene glycol ether with n moles ethylene oxide
n is the number of EO Units in the product.
n can be any number, and a number of EO Units (n) can be chosen depending on the application.
The individual grades of the Isotridecanol ethoxylate series differ in the number of adducted moles of ethylene oxide and cover a broad spectrum of beneficial properties in a wide range of applications.
The individual grades differ in the number n of added moles of ethylene oxide and, accordingly, in the length of the polyethylene glycol ether chain.
The letter n denotes the average degree of ethoxylation since a range of ethoxylation stages is produced during the preparation.
The Isotridecanol Ethoxylate grades are, thus, like all alcohol ethoxylates, mixtures of homologous alkyl polyethylene glycol ethers.

Solubility
*The solubility of Isotridecanol Ethoxylates in water increases with increasing degree of ethoxylation.
The lower ethoxylates (3-6 mol EO), in which the alkyl group predominates as the hydrophobic component, are only sparingly soluble in water.
However, they dissolve in nonpolar organic solvents and are used, for example, as w/o-emulsifiers.
In contrast, the higher ethoxylates are readily soluble in water.
Cloud Point
The cloud point is an important parameter for characterizing nonionic surfactants and is determined by a simple test method.
The phenomenon of the cloud point can be explained as follows: the solubility of ethoxylates in water is based on the hydration of the oxygen group via hydrogen bonds.
Since this hydration decreases with increasing temperature, the solubility of the surfactants in water decreases accordingly.
At a specific temperature, the initially clear solution of an ethoxylate immediately becomes cloudy because a water-immiscible surfactant phase is formed. This process is reversible; i.e., the solution clarifies at the same temperature upon cooling.
The temperature at which this clouding occurs is specific for each ethoxylate and is referred to as the surfactant’s cloud point.
The cloud point is a function of concentration and is usually determined in 1% or 2% aqueous surfactant solutions.
If the ethoxylate is insoluble or only sparingly soluble in water, the cloud point can also be determined in aqueous butyldiglycol solution.
For ethoxylates, whose aqueous solutions do not turn cloudy even at the boiling point of water, a cloud point can be determined by adding sodium chloride. The addition of electrolytes lowers the cloud point of the ethoxylates.
Foaming
The foaming capacity of Isotridecanol Ethoxylates varies from moderate to slight according to the degree of ethoxylation.
Isotridecanol + 1 mol EO/mol has the slightest tendency to foam.
The foaming capacity slightly increases with increasing EO content but does not equal that of anionic surface-active compounds.
Wetting effect
The wetting effect increases with the degree of ethoxylation to attain an optimum in readily water-soluble Isotridecanol + 8 mol EO/mol.
The wetting capacity of Isotridecanol + 8 mol EO/mol is particularly marked in the low-temperature range.
Surface tension
The ability to lower the surface tension of water is also related to the degree of ethoxylation.
The most effective grades are Isotridecanol + 6 mol EO/mol and Isotridecanol + 8 mol EO/mol.
The effect on the surface tension of water decreases as the degree of ethoxylation increases.
Cleaning properties
Isotridecanol Ethoxylates are noted for their excellent cleaning properties.
Whereas Isotridecanol + 6 EO has a decisive degreasing action and is preferred when grease-bound contamination is to be removed, Isotridecanol + 8 EO is mainly used to remove pigmented contamination.
Owing to their excellent surface-active properties, isotridecanol ethoxylates have numerous uses.
Having excellent wetting action, especially in the low-temperature range, and marked degreasing and emulsifying properties, they are suitable raw materials and mixture components for manufacturing universal cleaners in every form.
