PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION

 

2,2-DIMETHYLPROPANE-1,3-DIOL is a white crystalline solid. Melting point 130°C.

 

Neopentylglycol (NPG) is a unique polyalcohol offering superior performance advantages in many end-use applications due to its high chemical and thermal stability.

 

Neopentyl glycol (NPG) is used primarily in base resins for coatings. Important uses are also found in hydraulic fluids, synthetic lubricant oils, greases, metal-working fluids and aircraft engine lubricants. Other outlets include textiles, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, plasticisers and petroleum. NPG is shipped as flake, molten and slurry.

 

Neopentylglycol (NPG), or 2, 2-dimethyl-1, 3-propanediol,is mainly used as a building block in polyester resins for coatings, unsaturated polyesters, lubricants and plasticizers.

 

Examples of the various superior characteristics that Neopentylglycol  provides to its applications are high hydrolytic stability in polyester resin and high UV stability (UVA/UVB) in powder coating resins.

Reacts with inorganic acids and carboxylic acids to form esters plus water. Converted to aldehydes or acids by oxidizing agents. May initiate the polymerization of isocyanates and epoxides.

 

Neo has two primary hydroxyl groups. It is a white material in flakes. Neo is used in saturated polyesters for powder coatings, coil coatings and other stoving enamels, unsaturated polyesters for gel coats and reinforced plastics and in esters for synthetic lubricants.

TECHNOLOGY

There are two main routes to NPG using isobutyraldehyde and formaldehyde. In one, the raw materials react with a strongly alkaline catalyst to form NPG. But, large amounts of formate salts are formed as byproduct and the process is only economically viable when a profitable use is found for the formate.

 

In a second and more common process, the aldolisation reaction is carried out in the presence of an amine catalyst. This is further hydrogenated in the presence of a catalyst and the molten NPG is solidified by means of a flaking roll, or a crystallising or cooling belt.

 

Health and safety

NPG is a white, crystalline solid with a mint-like odour. Finely dispersed particles form explosive mixtures in air and it reacts violently with oxidants.

2,2-Dimethyl-1,3-propanediol may generate toxic gases in combination of with alkali metals, nitrides, and strong reducing agents. 2,2-Dimethyl-1,3-propanediol readily absorbs moisture on exposure to air.

Used for protection of carbonyl groups as 4,4-dimethyl-1,3-dioxanes, often preferred to the more usual 1,3-dioxolanes due to easier separation and greater stability, for protection of carbonyl group of 4-bromo-2-propanone using p-toluenesulfonic acid in the presence of triethyl orthoformate. It is used in the synthesis of polyesters, paints, lubricants, and plasticizers.

Especially used in paint and coating resin production, gelcoat and powder coating. A very limited amount is converted into esters and used in aircraft engine oil production.


Polyol synthesized by the reaction of isobutyraldehyde with formaldehyde. It is a raw material for polyester resins.
