Redispersible Powder for Dry-Mix Mortars
INTRODUCTION
ORP Thermobond 65 is a redispersible powder produced by drying an emulsion of Vinyl Acetate /
Vinyl Versatate / Acrylic terpolymer with PVOH as protective colloid. The specific chemical composition
of the polymer allows coalescence of the redispersed polymer at low temperatures and provides good
adhesion on mineral substrates.
ORP Thermobond 65 is used to modify mixtures containing hydraulic binders. Due to its particular
chemical / physical composition, ORP Thermobond 65 improves adhesion, flexibility and water
resistance of mortars containing hydraulic binders such as cement, gypsum or lime. Especially because
of the flexible nature ORP Thermobond 65 performs very well in transverse deformation conditions.

APPLICATION AREAS of ORP Thermobond 65
ORP Thermobond 65 can be used in mortar formulations where good flexibility/elasticity, recovery and
thixotropic behavior is required.
ETICS (Exterior Thermal Insulation Coating Systems) Plasters:
Due to its excellent flexibility and water resistance, ORP Thermobond 65 can be used for
manufacturing of cementitious base coats applied on EPS&XPS boards in ETICS. The recommended
dosage: 3.0 – 5.0 %
Adhesives for EPS&XPS boards in ETICS:
The recommended dosages: 1.0 – 2.0 %
Tile Adhesives (S1 & S2):
The recommended dosages: 3.0 – 7.0 %
PRODUCT HANDLING – STORAGE – SHELFLIFE
Packaging: Pallet with 18 paper bags, each 25 kg, also 500 or 1000 kg of big bags.
Packages must be stored in a dry and cool warehouse. Pallets must not be stacked on top of each
other to avoid caking due to the thermoplasticity of the polymer.
Packing must be closed well after usage for protection against humidity and caking. ORP Thermobond 65 has to be used within 6 months after the date of delivery.

Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVOH, PVA, or PVAl) is a water-soluble synthetic polymer. It has the idealized formula [CH2CH(OH)]n.  PVA is used in a variety of medical applications because of its biocompatibility, low tendency for protein adhesion, and low toxicity. Specific uses include cartilage replacements, contact lenses, and eye drops.[5] Polyvinyl alcohol is used as an aid in suspension polymerizations. Its largest application in China is its use as a protective colloid to make polyvinyl acetate dispersions. In Japan its major use is the production of Vinylon fiber.[6] This fiber is also manufactured in North Korea for self-sufficiency reasons, because no oil is required to produce it. The degree of polymerization of polyvinyl acetate is typically 100 to 5000, while its ester groups are sensitive to base hydrolysis and slowly convert PVAc into polyvinyl alcohol and acetic acid.
The glass transition temperature of polyvinyl acetate is between 30 and 45 °C depending on the molecular weight.
PVAc emulsions such as Elmer’s Glue-All contain polyvinyl alcohol as a protective colloid. A number of microorganisms can degrade polyvinyl acetate. Most commonly, damage is caused by filamentous fungi—however algae, yeasts, lichens, and bacteria can also degrade polyvinyl acetate.[2]
Discovery
Poly(vinyl acetate) was discovered in Germany in 1912 by Fritz Klatte.[3]
VeoVaTM vinyl ester monomers easily copolymerize with various other monomers through the vinyl ester group. In this way the specific properties of the monomer can be imparted to its copolymers. VeoVaTM monomer enhances the performance of vinyl acetate and acrylic based latices, significantly upgrading key properties such as water and alkali resistance in both types of polymer systems. Polymers based on VeoVaTM vinyl ester exhibit the required polymer hardness and flexibility balance, hydrophobicity and chemical resistance for the formulation of a wide range of latex coatings. The resulting paints are characterized by a very good water, UV and alkali resistance and therefore exhibit very good outdoor durability3 . VeoVaTM monomers have already been successfully used to manufacture VeoVaTM/vinyl acetate copolymer latices. Used as binders for architectural paints, these latices provide improved scrub resistance and exterior durability. The hydrophobicity and resistance to hydrolysis and UV degradation imparted by VeoVaTM monomers make them particularly suitable for producing highperformance latices, especially when they are copolymerized with acrylic and methacrylic monomers. Preparation
Unlike most vinyl polymers, PVA is not prepared by polymerization of the corresponding monomer as the monomer, vinyl alcohol, is thermodynamically unstable with respect to its tautomer acetaldehyde. Instead, PVA is prepared by hydrolysis of polyvinyl acetate[3], or sometimes other vinyl ester-derived polymers with formate or chloroacetate groups instead of acetate. Structure and properties
PVA is an atactic material that exhibits crystallinity. In terms of microstructure, it is composed mainly of 1,3-diol linkages [-CH2-CH(OH)-CH2-CH(OH)-] but a few percent of 1,2-diols [-CH2-CH(OH)-CH(OH)-CH2-] occur, depending on the conditions for the polymerization of the vinyl ester precursor.[3]
Polyvinyl alcohol has excellent film forming, emulsifying and adhesive properties. It is also resistant to oil, grease and solvents. It has high tensile strength and flexibility, as well as high oxygen and aroma barrier properties. Safety and environmental considerations
PVA is widely used, thus its toxicity and biodegradation are of interest. Solutions containing up to 5% PVA are nontoxic to fish.[3] It biodegrades slowly.[9]
ORP Thermobond 65 is a redispersible powder produced by drying an emulsion of Vinyl Acetate /
VeoVa / Acrylic terpolymer with PVOH as protective colloid. The specific chemical composition of the
polymer allows coalescence of the redispersed polymer at low temperatures and provides good

ORP Thermobond 65 is used to modify mixtures containing hydraulic binders. Due to its particular
chemical / physical composition, ORP Thermobond 65 improves adhesion, flexibility and water
resistance of mortars containing hydraulic binders such as cement, gypsum or lime. Especially because
of the flexible nature ORP Thermobond 65 performs very well in transverse deformation conditions.
Packaging: Pallet with 18 paper bags, each 25 kg, also 500 or 1000 kg of big bags.
Packages must be stored in a dry and cool warehouse. Pallets must not be stacked on top of each
other to avoid caking due to the thermoplasticity of the polymer.
Packing must be closed well after usage for protection against humidity and caking. It has to be used
within 6 months after the date of delivery.
 
In the 1950’s, Dr. Herbert Koch, from the Max Plank Institute in Mülheim, Germany, found that olefins may react with carbon monoxide and water under the influence of strong acids to form tertiary branched neocarboxylic acids (Figure 1). Before the intermediate carbocation reacts with carbon monoxide, isomerization reactions are observed and, therefore, the resulting acid is composed of a number of isomers1,2 The neocarboxylic acid can be converted into its vinyl ester monomer by reaction with acetylene. Today, these monomers are marketed under the trade name VeoVa™ vinyl ester and are also widely referred to in industry as vinyl versatate monomers, neo-esters or VV monomers. VeoVaTM vinyl esters are very hydrophobic monomers with a highly branched tertiary substituted α-carbon structure. Their principal use is as hydrophobic co-monomers in vinyl and acrylic polymerization. Their alkyl neocarboxylic group is very resistant to degradation in alkaline conditions as there is no hydrogen on the α-carbon atom. The branched tertiary structure with bulky and hydrophobic hydrocarbon groups provides the neo-ester monomers (Figure 2) with a highly hydrophobic nature and low surface tension. PRODUCT HANDLING – STORAGE – SHELFLIFE OF ORP THERMOBOND 65
Packaging: Pallet with 18 paper bags, each 25 kg (450 kg) or big bags (500 kg).
Packages must be stored in a dry and cool warehouse at temperatures between 10 – 25 °C. Pallets
must not be stacked on top of each other to avoid caking due to the thermoplasticity of the polymer.
Packing must be closed well after usage for protection against humidity and caking. It has to be used
within 6 months.
 
ORP Thermobond 65
 
ORP Thermobond 65 is a redispersible powder obtained by PVA drying of the emulsion of Vinyl Acetate / VeoVa / Acrylic terpolymer as a protective colloid. The chemical composition of the polymer allows the redispersible polymer to combine at low temperatures and provides good adhesion to mineral substrates. ORP Thermobond 65 is used to replace mixtures containing various binders. Due to its special physical / chemical composition, ORP Thermobond 65 increases the adhesion, elasticity and water resistance of the solutions. Due to its particularly flexible nature, ORP Thermobond 65 performs well in lateral deformation.

ORP Thermobond 65 est une poudre redispersable produite par séchage d’une émulsion d’acétate de vinyle /
Terpolymère vinyle polyvalent / acrylique avec PVOH comme colloïde protecteur. La composition chimique spécifique
du polymère permet la coalescence du polymère redispersé à basses températures et fournit une bonne
adhérence sur substrats minéraux.
ORP Thermobond 65 est utilisé pour modifier les mélanges contenant des liants hydrauliques. En raison de sa particularité
composition chimique / physique, ORP Thermobond 65 améliore l’adhérence, la flexibilité et l’eau
résistance des mortiers contenant des liants hydrauliques tels que le ciment, le gypse ou la chaux. Spécialement parce que

fabrication de couches de base en ciment appliquées sur des panneaux EPS et XPS en ETICS. Le recommandé

MANUTENTION DES PRODUITS – STOCKAGE – SHELFLIFE
Emballage: palette avec 18 sacs en papier de 25 kg chacun, ainsi que 500 ou 1000 kg de big bags.
Les colis doivent être stockés dans un entrepôt sec et frais. Les palettes ne doivent pas être empilées les unes sur les autres
autre pour éviter la prise en masse due à la thermoplasticité du polymère.
L’emballage doit être bien fermé après utilisation pour une protection contre l’humidité et le mottage. ORP Thermobond 65 doit être utilisé dans les 6 mois suivant la date de livraison.

ORP Thermobond 65 est une poudre redispersable produite par séchage d’une émulsion d’acétate de vinyle /
Tero polymère VeoVa / acrylique avec PVOH comme colloïde protecteur. La composition chimique spécifique du
polymère permet la coalescence du polymère redispersé à basses températures et fournit une bonne
adhérence sur substrats minéraux.
ORP Thermobond 65 est utilisé pour modifier les mélanges contenant des liants hydrauliques. En raison de sa particularité
composition chimique / physique, ORP Thermobond 65 améliore l’adhérence, la flexibilité et l’eau
résistance des mortiers contenant des liants hydrauliques tels que le ciment, le gypse ou la chaux. Spécialement parce que
de nature flexible ORP Thermobond 65 fonctionne très bien dans des conditions de déformation transversale.

MANUTENTION DES PRODUITS – STOCKAGE – SHELFLIFE OF ORP THERMOBOND 65
Emballage: palette avec 18 sacs en papier de 25 kg (450 kg) ou grands sacs (500 kg).
Les colis doivent être stockés dans un entrepôt sec et frais à des températures comprises entre 10 et 25 ° C. Palettes
ne doivent pas être empilés les uns sur les autres pour éviter l’agglutination due à la thermoplasticité du polymère.
L’emballage doit être bien fermé après utilisation pour une protection contre l’humidité et le mottage. Il doit être utilisé
dans les 6 mois.
