DEFINITION OF POLYDIMETHYL SILOXANE :
Consists of fully methylated linear siloxane polymers containing repeating
units of the formula (CH3)2SiO, with trimethylsiloxy end-blocking units of the
formula (CH3)3SiOThe
article of commerce used as an antifoaming agent can be further
specified as to total silicon.
Clear, colourless, viscous liquid. Polydimethylsiloxane is frequently used in
commerce as such, as a liquid containing 4-5% silica gel, and as an
aqueous emulsion formulation containing, in addition to silica gel,
emulsifiers and preservatives. The pure substance described here can be
isolated by centrifuging from the silica gel-containing liquid at about 20,000
rpm.

FUNCTIONAL USES OF POLYDIMETHYL SILOXANE:
Antifoaming agent, anticaking agent
Simethicone is an oral anti-foaming agent used to reduce bloating, discomfort and
pain caused by excess gas in the stomach or intestinal tract. Simethicone is a mixture
of polydimethylsiloxane and hydrated silica gel.
Simethicone Emulsion USP is a water dilutable, non-ionic emulsion containing 30%
Simethicone USP by weight. Highly stable over a broad pH range. Simethicones are used
as anti foam agents in the manufacture of drugs. Their use in Pharmaceuticals is to comb.
