Description of Polyquaternium 16

Luviquat Excellence is a quaternized copolymer for hair and skin care. It is an aqueous solution of cationic polymers of different charge density and different degrees of setting and conditioning. This product is a clear to slightly turbid yellowish viscous liquid, with a slight characteristic odor. Luviquat Excellence has a weight composition of 5% VP, a solids content of 38-42, and a charge density of 6.1 meq/g at pH 7.

Cationic styling / conditioning polymer. Highly recommended for rinses and hair treatments. Protects the hair while improving the wet combability of hair. Reduces electro-static charging while hair is drying.

Définition :

 

Le nom polyquaternium, nom officiel INCI (International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients), a été formé à partir des mots polymère et ammonium quaternaire.

Polyquaternium 16 s’agit en effet de polymères ou de copolymères dont le motif constitutif contient une ou plusieurs fonctions ammonium quaternaire.

Le numéro qui suit le nom n’a pas de signification chimique, c’est un numéro d’ordre dans la découverte et l’enregistrement de ces produits.

Les polyquaterniums constituent une famille de molécules principalement utilisées comme ingrédients pour les cosmétiques.

 

2) Leurs fonctions dans la formulation des cosmétiques :

On en retrouve dans pratiquement tous les produits utilisés pour l’entretien et la mise en forme des cheveux :

– Shampooings

– Lotions capillaires

– Permanentes

– Teintures capillaires

– Défrisants

– Démêlants

– ….

ainsi que dans les produits vendus pour l’entretien et les “soins” de la peau :

– Savons liquides

– Gels douches

– Nettoyants pour la peau

– Crèmes hydratantes

– Crèmes à raser

– ….

Les fonctions des polyquaterniums dans les produits que nous venons de citer sont diverses ; ce sont des agents :

– de conditionnement capillaire : un produit conditionneur rend les cheveux souples, doux et brillants et leur donne du volume.

– hydratants, essentiellement pour la peau.

– donnant de l’onctuosité (c’est une propriété liée à la consistance pour les laits les mousses les gels et les crèmes).

– viscosants ; ils jouent le rôle de gélifiant ou d’épaississant.

– épaississants combinés avec des argiles smectiques (comme la bentonite par exemple de formule (Al,Mg)8(Si4O10)4(OH)8,12H2O).

– fixateurs ; ils permettent un contrôle physique de la coiffure.

– antistatiques ; ils empêchent les cheveux et les poils d’être “électriques” en réduisant l’électricité statique.

– donnant de la substantivité (ce mot est synonyme de rémanence) au produit cosmétique, c’est-à-dire qu’ils lui permettent de rester assez longtemps sur les cheveux ou sur la peau.

– filmogènes ; en se déposant sur le cheveu ou sur la peau lors du rinçage ils forment un film protecteur.

C’est aussi un agent décontaminant (antimicrobien) utilisé dans les liquides dans lesquels on fait baigner les lentilles oculaires ; il agit sur les membranes cellulaires des germes.
