Thiram, also called TMTD or tetramethylthiuram disulfide, is a dithiocarbamate fungicide used to prevent crop damage and deterioration before and after harvest and acts as a seed protectant.

Thiram is the simplest thiuram disulfide and the oxidized dimer of dimethyldithiocarbamate.

Thiram (tetramethylthiuram disulfide) is a dithiocarbamate compound widely used as a fungicide in agriculture to protect vegetable crops and seeds.

Thiram is used as a fungicide ectoparasiticide to prevent fungal diseases in seeds and crops and similarly, as an animal repellent to protect fruit trees and ornamentals from damage by rabbits, rodents, and deer.

Thiram is effective against the Stem gall of coriander, damping off, smut of millet, neck rot of onion, etc.

Although it is a crop protection fungicide, using thiram as an animal repellent is the most likely source of exposure to pet animals.

Thiram has been used in treating human scabies as a sunscreen, and bactericide applied directly to the skin or incorporated into soap.

Thiram is also used as a sulfur source and secondary accelerator for the sulfur vulcanization of rubbers.

Thiram is an organic disulfide that results from the formal oxidative dimerization of N,N-dimethyldithiocarbamic acid.

Thiram is widely used as a fungicidal seed treatment.

Thiram has a role as an antibacterial drug, an antiseptic drug, and an antifungal agrochemical.

Thiram contains a dimethyldithiocarbamate.

Thiram is functionally related to a dimethyldithiocarbamic acid.

Thiram may be used in dermatology as a scabicide.

Thiram is mainly used as a fungicide for plants and as a treatment for seeds.

Chemical properties of Thiram:

Tetramethylthiuram disulfide is a type of sulfur fungicide.

Tetramethylthiuram disulfide has been found to dissolve entirely in chloroform, acetone, and ether.

Tetramethylthiuram disulfide is available as dust, flowable, wettable powder, water-dispersible granules, and water suspension formulations and in mixtures with other fungicides.

Thiram is of low to moderate persistence.

Thiram: Formula, C6H12N2S4; MW, 240.44; MP, 155–156°C; BP, 129°C (at 20 mm Hg); log P, 1.73; VP, 1.73E-05 mm Hg; solubility in H2O, 30 mg/l; other solubilities (g/l at 25°C): ethanol < 10, acetone 80, chloroform 230, and hexane 0.04; (g/l at 20°C) dichloromethane 170, toluene 18, and isopropanol 0.7

Thiram is only slightly soluble in water (30 mg l−1) and has a strong tendency to adsorb to soil particles, and thus is not expected to contaminate groundwater.

The soil half-life for thiram is reported to be 15 days. Thiram degrades more readily in acidic soils and soils high in organic matter.

Thiram has been shown to persist for up to 2 months in sandy soil but disappeared within 1 week from compost soil.

The significant metabolites of thiram in soil are copper dimethyldithiocarbamates, dithiocarbamate, dimethylamine, and carbon disulfide.

Thiram can be degraded in soil by microbial action or hydrolysis under acidic conditions.

Thiram is rapidly broken down in water by hydrolysis and photodegradation, especially under acidic conditions.

Tetramethylthiuram disulfide is nearly immobile in clay soils or soils of high organic matter.

It is not expected to contaminate groundwater because of its in-soil half-life of 15 days and its tendency to adhere to soil particles.

As a waste, thiram carries an EPA U244 code.

Toxicity

Thiram is moderately toxic by ingestion but highly toxic if inhaled.

Acute exposure in humans may cause headaches, dizziness, fatigue, nausea, diarrhea, and other gastrointestinal complaints.

Chronic or repeated exposure may cause sensitive skin and may affect the thyroid or liver.

Uses of Thiram:

1. Thiram belongs to protective fungicides of broad spectrum, with a residual effect period of up to 7d or so.

It is mainly used for dealing with seeds and soil and preventing powdery mildew, smut, and rice seedlings damping off of cereal crops.

It can also be used for some fruit trees and vegetable diseases.

For example, dressing seed with 500g of 50% wettable powder can control rice blast, leaf spot, barley, and wheat smut.

2. As a pesticide, Tetramethylthiuram Disulfide is often called thiram.

Thiram is mainly used to treat seeds and soil and to prevent and control cereal powdery mildew, smut, and vegetable diseases.

As the super accelerator of natural rubber, synthetic rubber, and latex, this product is often called accelerator TMTD.

Thiram (TMTD) represents a thiuram vulcanization accelerator, accounting for 85% of the total amount of similar products.

Thiram (TMTD) is also the super accelerator of natural rubber, diene synthetic rubber, Ⅱ, R, and EPDM, with the highest utilization rate.

The vulcanization-promoting force of Tetramethylthiuram Disulfide (TMTD) is powerful but not vulcanized without zinc oxide.

3. Thiram is used to manufacture cables, wires, tires, and other rubber products.

4. Thiram is the super accelerator of natural, synthetic, and latex rubber.

5. Thiram is used as the late effect promoter of natural rubber, butadiene rubber, styrene-butadiene rubber, and polyisoprene rubber.

6. Thiram is used for the pest control of rice, wheat, tobacco, sugar beet, grapes, and other crops, as well as for seed dressing and soil treatment.

7. Thiram is suitable for manufacturing natural rubber, synthetic rubber, and latex and can be used as a curing agent.

Thiram is the second accelerator of thiazole accelerators, which can be used as the continuous vulcanization accelerator with other accelerators.

8. Thiram (Tetramethylthiuram Disulfide) can be used as the super-vulcanization accelerator in the rubber industry and is often used with a thiazole accelerator.

Thiram can also be combined with other accelerators as the continuous rubber accelerator.

Thiram can also be used as a curing agent for slowly decomposing out of free sulfur at more than 100 ℃.

Its products have excellent resistance to aging and heat, so it applies to natural and synthetic rubber.

Thiram mainly manufactures tires, tubes, shoes, cables, and other industrial products.

In agriculture, Thiram can be used as a fungicide and insecticide, and it can also be used as a lubricant additive.

9.  Production methods from dimethylamine, carbon disulfide, ammonia condensation reaction was dimethyl dithiocarbamate and then the oxidation of hydrogen peroxide to the finished product.
