TIB KAT 256 is a non-corrosive organotin CATALYST that can be used to synthesize saturated polyester in powder coatings, insulating varnishes, and coil coatings.
TIB KAT 256 is mainly used as a catalyst in producing unsaturated polyester resins, saturated polyester resins, polyester polyols, powder-coating resins and polymeric plasticizers

TIB KAT 256 as a Catalyst

TIB KAT 256 primarily produces polyester and alkyd resins in the catalysis of esterification reactions, transesterification reactions, and polycondensation reactions up to 240 °C. 

TIB KAT 256 catalyst is integrated into the final product without impacting quality. 

As such, processes with TIB KAT 256 do not require subsequent neutralization or filtering of the catalyst. 

This makes for a technically simple application process.

TIB KAT 256 significantly shortens esterification times – 20% to 25% less reaction time when compared to tin-free catalysts – enabling reaction at lower temperatures, saving energy, and increasing the efficiency of both process and plants. 

Another advantage of TIB KAT 256 is that it reduces undesirable side reactions, such as dehydration or oxidative decomposition of polyhydric alcohols.

The catalyst can be modified in advance with other ligands and requires no special handling measures, only avoiding excessive moisture. 

The final product is higher quality than lithium-based catalysts – offering improved color properties and less haze formation.

The effectiveness of the TIB KAT 256 catalyst is proven for some short, medium, and long oil alkyds.

Economic Significance of TIB KAT 256

Its catalytic properties make TIB KAT 256 an essential raw material for the production of unsaturated polyester resins in a variety of applications, such as powder coatings and coil coatings for coating steel and aluminum sheets; for coatings in plastic mold making; and foils.

It is used as a binder for lacquers and paints and in oleochemistry for various esterification and transesterification products.

Use as Stabilizer

In addition to its use as a catalyst, TIB KAT 256 can also be used to produce tin stabilizers for various plastics, such as PVC.

Transport and Storage

TIB KAT 256 is available in various packaging options. It can be stored in its original sealed packaging for at least 6 months without losing quality.
