TWEEN 24

Tween 24 is a 100% bio-based ethoxylated sorbitan ester based on a natural fatty acid (lauric acid) and manufactured via the RSPO’s Mass Balance System.

Built on the well-established technology of Tween 20, Tween 24 offers all the same benefits but provides the option of enhanced performance (benefits are active ingredient dependent).

Tween 24 has several sustainable credentials including reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in end use application, validated by an external company, Avieco.

Tween 24 has long been established as an effective adjuvant for built-in and tank-added applications with an advantageous ecological and toxicological profile.

Tweens allow formulators to push performance forward with trusted and familiar chemistry.

Tween 22, Tween 23 and Tween 24 offer enhanced surface activity to provide better wetting, lower equilibrium surface tension (EST) and lower contact angle compared to Tween 20.

Tween 24 can significantly increase yields and reduce land use.

In reducing the land required to grow the crop, significant carbon and water savings can be achieved.

Easy to use, Tween 24 also shows improved performance with various hydrophilic herbicides, all with minimal impact on registration due to the fact Tween 24 has the same CAS as Tween 20.

Tween 24 is suitable for use as an inert ingredient in combination with permitted active pesticidal ingredients according to US NOP.

Tween 24 is a 100% bio-based ethoxylated sorbitan ester based on a natural fatty acid (lauric acid) and manufactured via the RSPO’s Mass Balance System.

Tween 24 is highly effective at forming O/W emulsions.

Tween 24 polysorbates are surfactants which are formed by reacting 100% bio-based ethylene oxide with 100% bio-based sorbitan esters (SPAN USDA BioPreferred Certified 100% bio-based).

100% bio-based ethylene oxide is made from 100% bio-based ethanol, derived from corn, sugar cane or biomass.

Tween 24 sorbitan esters are 100% bio-based and are made from sorbitol derived from corn, and fatty acids derived from either palm oil, coconut oil, rape seed oil or tallow.

Tween 24 polysorbate surfactants are hydrophilic, meaning they are generally soluble or dispersible in water, and excellent emulsifiers, forming oil-in-water or water-in-oil emulsions.

Tween 24 polysorbates are used in many personal care applications as well as industrial cleaning, fiber finish, crop protection, water treatment, paints and coatings, lubricants, and many other industrial applications.

Tween 24 is a 100% bio-based ethoxylated sorbitan ester derived from natural lauric acid and manufactured using the RSPO’s Mass Balance System.

Tween 24 is highly effective in forming O/W emulsions, making it suitable for air care, hard surface cleaning, industrial & institutional cleaning, and waxes & polishes applications.

Tween 24 functions as both an emulsifier and solubilizer.

As a general-purpose adjuvant, Tween 24 is recommended for systemic active ingredients, providing superior penetration and humectancy properties resulting in enhance efficacy of active ingredients.

Built on the well-established technology of Tween 20, Tween 24 offers all the same benefits but provides the option of enhanced performance (benefits are active ingredient dependant).

Tween 24 has an identical CAS number to Tween 20 so there are minimal regulatory hurdles if Tween 20 (or equivalent) is already being used.

Tween 24 is part of a larger range of Tween adjuvants.

Tween 24 has several sustainable credentials including:

Reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in end use application, validated by an external company Avieco.

‘Clean label’ surfactant – safe and established ecological and toxicological profiles with minimum health and environmental impact.

Available as part of Croda’s ECO range of 100% biobased, 100% renewable surfactants.

Making Ethylene Oxide Sustainable:

With increasing consumer demand for renewably sourced and sustainable products, we are pleased to introduce our new Tween range of 100% bio-based surfactants.

In recent years, “greener” non-ethoxylated ingredients have been used in the pursuit of more renewable formulations, but the performance has not met the levels achieved when using traditional ethoxylates.

With significant investment at our Atlas Point manufacturing site, located in Delaware, USA, our plant is the first of its kind in the US to produce bio-based EO from bio-ethanol.

This development enables the production of sustainable and bio-based ethoxylates.

Certified Bio-based Content:

Tween range helps formulators meet renewability targets.

Replacing petrochemical based surfactants for Tween range products will improve bio-based content of the formulation.

All Tween products are being registered on the USDA BioPreferred Program.

Carbon saving fungicide case study:

In partnership with a key customer, Land Use and Crop Science Innovation field trial studies were carried out in Brazil.

Conducted over three growing seasons, the study showed how incorporating Tween 24 into a fungicide formulation against soybean rust can significantly improve yield and reduce land use, as well as identify associated water and carbon savings.

As a result of the yield improvement, a greater mass of crop can be produced per hectare, lowering the land area required to grow one tonne of soybeans; this can be expressed as a land saving.

This land would typically require energy inputs, all of which will have associated carbon emissions; in reducing the land required to grow the crop, significant carbon and water savings can be achieved, these have been externally validated by Avieco.

Extrinsic sustainable benefits in herbicides:

Tween 24 was incorporated into a combination suspension concentrate (SC) formulation of flufenacet and terbuthylazine and applied to the weed species, Ipomoea (cv Heavenly Blue, a morning glory variety).

The data presented in figure 1 looks at how the herbicide applications affect the ability of the weed to photosynthesise.

A lower number in photosynthetic efficiency means the weed photosynthesises less and thus leads to destruction (or killing) of the weed.

Compared to the control (the herbicide containing no adjuvant), the herbicide containing Tween 24 reduced the photosynthetic efficiency of the weed, therefore suppressing the weed’s ability to photosynthesise.

Tween 24 was 27 % more effective than the traditional adjuvant technology (Tween 80) and 33 % more effective than using no adjuvant (control).

Tween 24 can increase the efficacy of herbicide applications.

There are two paths to be investigated:

1. The amount of active ingredient required can be reduced.

Carbon saved because of having to manufacture less active ingredient.

The active ingredient is often the most expensive part of the formulation so there is an economic benefit of replacing the active ingredient with Tween 24.

2. The number of spray applications can be reduced.

Less tractor passes meaning less fuel used, less CO2 emitted and less soil compaction.

Less volume of herbicide required so less associated carbon in producing the product and less packaging.
